In the modern world, we no longer have time for magic, dismissing it as mere mumbo-jumbo from a less enlightened age. One might say, in fact, that the magic has gone out of our lives. Most of us, however, misunderstand just what magic is – a mechanism for manipulating the world around us, which through suppression and since the ascent of the scientific era, has mostly faded from memory. Yet this force lives on and indeed is fundamental to the very fabric of the Universe.

Probing deeper, we find that most of that which makes up all that apparently exists – in the form of dark matter and dark energy – remains a mystery to modern mainstream science. We discover that conventional notions of time, space, and matter are illusions and that reality is subjective, malleable, and made up of myriad unseen, unknown levels. We learn that our beliefs and expectations, our desire and will, play a part in shaping reality and in doing so, we understand that we can manipulate the mechanics of the non-material toward our own ends. Materialist science may reject mind over matter, but it’s real enough. From particle physics to psychic powers, and from Donald Trump to 9/11, we roam the realms where science and sorcery are one and the same, and nothing or nowhere is quite what it seems.

Stephen Hurrell discusses his book Dinosaurs and the Expanding Earth. When Dinosaurs and the Expanding Earth was first published it proposed a startling idea to explain the long-standing puzzle of the dinosaurs’ vast size. Some paleontologists have suggested that many dinosaurs’ bones were simply not strong enough to support their enormous weight. Hurrell, however, presented scientific evidence that dinosaurs lived in reduced gravity and this allowed them to grow to gigantic proportions. The Reduced Gravity Earth theory explains why life – including dinosaurs, plants and insects – evolved towards a larger scale on the ancient Earth. It is also a key piece of evidence that provides additional support for an Expanding Earth, something a number of leading geologists have been suggesting for decades. Expanding Earth theory postulates that hundreds of millions of years ago, our planet was much, much smaller, gradually growing over time as it accrued material from elsewhere in the solar system.

For reasons still debated, the dinosaurs, and indeed many other ancient forms of life, did not survive the Earth changes that beset them. If such changes are in fact not in the distant past but actually still underway, what could this mean for the future of life on Earth? As changing gravity and Expanding Earth claim to answer some of the most vexing questions about life on this planet, what might they suggest about life elsewhere in the solar system, the galaxy and the entire Universe?

PODCAST #2

World-renowned geologist James Maxlow discusses the theory of Expansion Tectonics. In a startling challenge to conventional geology, Expansion Tectonics suggests that the Earth has not always been the same size. Hundreds of millions of years ago, it may have been much, much smaller, with vast implications for the past, present and future of life on this planet. A single super-continent called Pangaea dominated Earth 300 million years ago. But whereas Plate Tectonics states that it existed surrounded by a huge super-ocean, Expansion Tectonics suggests that it covered the entire planetary surface. As the planet expanded – about 100 million years ago – so the spaces currently occupied by the great oceans opened up.

Expansion Tectonics offers a radical overhaul of many accepted ideas about the Earth. It can help explain patterns of evolution, how life spread across the planet, catastrophic mass extinctions, and mysteries such as how and when Antarctica could once have been lush, green and free from ice. The theory therefore has relevance to Earth changes that we are witnessing today. It also poses many fascinating questions: if the planet is expanding, where does the additional matter come from? What, if anything, can it tell us about the origins of the Earth? Is expansion occurring on other planets, in other galaxies or even throughout the entire Universe?

With or without Expansion Tectonics, the Earth does continue to expand, although the rate – just a few centimeters per year – is stretched across such a vast timescale that it has barely registered since human beings first evolved. However, should it continue, life on Earth will once again be profoundly transformed during the next few million years.

Hello all! Popular culture – TV, films, literature – both reflects society and influences it. In an increasingly repressive and ‘woke’ artistic world, is fantasy now the style best suited to commentary on the so-called ‘real world’ where political correctness dominates discourse at the expense of freedom of speech? Where we once had cutting satire to ridicule politics, religion, academia, the arts and so on, we now have more subtle and supposedly safer forms of subversion which seem to reflect a general retreat into unreality in our day to day lives. Identity politics, online safety acts and hate speech laws have muted millions for fear of castigation or even criminalization, and creativity is suffering as a result.

This week I talked for the first time with Michelle Horsley, wife of longtime Legalise Freedom guest Jasun Horsley. At every level of society, from personal to global, we face mounting crises in The 3 Es – Energy, Economy, Environment. These have been well documented on this podcast right back to its beginning in 2012. But they’re nothing new. The first major signs of pinch points involving all three arguably first appeared during the oil crisis of the 1970s. Since then, national, international and global institutions based on and attempting to exert control over these systems have been dominated by the idea that there is a technological solution to every problem. However, at the end of the first quarter of the 21^st century, problems with energy supply and the monetary system are becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

What this may mean for our day to day lives is finally beginning to manifest in mass consciousness, even as technocratic government and corporate elites scramble to suppress the gathering signs of systemic stress and ultimately, collapse. The current war in Iran should give us pause as we watch an advanced society struggling to cope without water, without food, without power, without communications. Is it time to consider how such crushing constraints might impact you in the not too distant future?

Myths and legends from around the world tell of a lost, ancient civilization swept away by a major catastrophe during prehistoric times. The people or peoples dimly-remembered are often said to have been technologically advanced, culturally sophisticated, and capable of amazing feats that the scientists and engineers of our age still cannot comprehend. The fate of both Lemuria and Atlantis represent perhaps the best-known telling of such tales. Biblical stories such as those of The Fall of Man and Noah and The Ark – the latter also reflected in the many other flood myths – echo suppressed species memories of some ancient cataclysm which may have brought humanity to the brink of extinction. Other cosmologies paint a very different picture from mainstream accounts of human antiquity and evolution, including our origins among the stars, or perhaps even other dimensions of space-time. As we collectively face an increasingly uncertain future, what might the past have to teach us about the people that we were, that we are, and that we could be?

Original show notes: Chris Cole of Drone Wars UK on the growing use of drones in combat and surveillance. As governments and military increasingly engage in warfare and spying by remote control, who – or what – is really in charge? Aerial drones and ground-based robots are becoming ever more intelligent and autonomous. Once they become self-aware, will humans finally be removed from split-second, life-and-death decisions?

Topics covered include the development and deployment of drones, risks and rewards of the technology, legal and ethical objections, Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan, terrorism, extrajudicial assassinations, autonomous and self-aware drones, non-military use of drones, robots and other land-based systems, and how drones are shaping the future of war and surveillance.

Background:

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVS), also known as drones, are aircraft either controlled by ‘pilots’ from the ground or increasingly, autonomously following a pre-programmed mission. While there are dozens of different types of drones, they basically fall into two categories: those that are used for reconnaissance and surveillance purposes and those that are armed with missiles and bombs.

Use of drones has grown quickly in recent years because unlike manned aircraft they can stay aloft for many hours (Zephyr, a British drone under development, has just broken the world record by flying for over 82 hours non-stop), they are much cheaper than military aircraft and they are flown remotely so there is no danger to the flight crew.

While the British and US Reaper and Predator drones are physically in Afghanistan and Iraq, control is via satellite from Nellis and Creech USAF base outside Las Vegas, Nevada. Ground crews launch drones from the conflict zone, then operation is handed over to controllers at video screens in specially designed trailers in the Nevada desert. One person ‘flies’ the drone, another operates and monitors the cameras and sensors, while a third person is in contact with the ‘customers’, ground troops and commanders in the war zone. While armed drones were first used in the Balkans war, their use has dramatically escalated in Afghanistan, Iraq and in the CIA’s undeclared war in Pakistan.

The US has two separate ‘squadrons’ of armed drones – one run by the US Air Force and one run by the CIA. Using drones, the US Air Force has increased the number of combat air patrols it can fly by 600 per cent over the past six years; indeed at any time there are at least 36 American armed UAVS over Afghanistan and Iraq. CIA Director Leon Panetta has recently said that drones are “the only game in town.” The CIA have been using drones in Pakistan and other countries to assassinate terrorist leaders. While this programme was initiated by the Bush Administration, it has increased under Obama and there have been 41 known drone strikes in Pakistan since Obama became President. Analysis by an American think tank The Brookings Institution on drone attacks in Pakistan has shown that for every militant leader killed, 10 civilians also have died.

Military drone manufacturers are looking for civilian uses for remote sensing drones to expand their markets and this includes the use of drones for domestic surveillance. Drones will make possible the dramatic expansion of the surveillance state. With the convergence of other technologies it may even make possible machine recognition of faces, behaviours, and the monitoring of individual conversations. The sky, so to speak, is the limit.

“These days our bureaucracies are not merely expensive and burdensome, they’re also stunningly incompetent. There’s a reason why NASA has to hire private contractors to put people into orbit; despite more than ample budgets, the bureaucracy that once put bootprints on the Moon hasn’t been able to design and build a working spacecraft in more than a quarter century. This is typical. Corporate and nonprofit bureaucracies are no better; need I cite Hollywood, which has completely lost the ability to make movies that audiences can enjoy?

“None of this is accidental. As privileged classes become comfortable and decadent, they always try to shield their members from having to deal with the consequences of their own actions. That’s why you hear so much talk these days about “failing up:” no matter how miserably bad a job you do, if you belong to the bureaucratic class, you don’t have to worry about your career. Even if the firm you run crashes into ruin as a result of your idiocy, you’ll inevitably find a well-paying post elsewhere. The downside, of course, is that people thus sheltered never learn from their mistakes, and the institutions that shelter them end up mired in hopeless incompetence. Bring all these factors together with the potential for catabolic crisis and the implications are obvious.”

Today the world’s population is in the grip of a pandemic of chronic disease. The primary reason is that our dietary and health advice, and most of our medical systems, are directed by corporations purely in the interests of profit, not of human health. Industrial manufacturers churn out toxic concoctions of chemicals masquerading as food, to be fed to the increasingly obese and debilitated masses who believe that their own health is somehow not their responsibility. This surrender to state and corporate control was massively accelerated during the recent pandemic phase. However, there is a darker control agenda underlying these trends to which money, energy and – in this case, health – are absolutely central.

This week I welcome back author, futurist, science fiction expert and Legalise Freedom regular Thomas Lombardo.

In a universe portrayed in the modern age as being utterly devoid of meaning and purpose, emotion is often regarded as little more than human weakness. There is a widely held view that emotion should certainly play no part in major decisions and actions, be they politics, business, science, or war. But what if emotion were actually one of the fundamental features of consciousness itself, guiding its evolution?

Against a background of the overall origin and nature of consciousness, we ask: What if it is in fact impossible for emotion - and its partner motivation - to be separated from thinking and reason? What if they are essentially two sides of the same coin? Science is driving the development of the technologies which will most affect our future: renewable energy, food production, employment, medicine, finance, surveillance, and international security. And yet it is a falsehood that science – or anything else in the realm of human affairs - can somehow operate independently from human emotion and motivation. If this is understood and integrated, we have a better chance of a future less motivated by greed, power, hatred and revenge.

Vlatko Vedral on Decoding Reality – The Universe as Quantum Information. What is the nature of reality? Why is there something rather than nothing? These are the deepest questions that human beings have asked, that thinkers East and West have pondered over millennia. For a physicist, all the world is information. The Universe and its workings are the ebb and flow of information. We are all transient patterns of information, passing on the blueprints for our basic forms to future generations using a digital code called DNA.

Decoding Reality asks some of the deepest questions about the Universe and considers the implications of interpreting it in terms of information. It explains the nature of information, the idea of entropy, and the roots of this thinking in thermodynamics. It describes the bizarre effects of quantum behaviour such as ‘entanglement’, which Einstein called ‘spooky action at a distance’ and explores cutting edge work on harnessing quantum effects in hyper-fast quantum computers, and how recent evidence suggests that the weirdness of the quantum world, once thought limited to the tiniest scales, may reach up into our reality.

The book concludes by considering the answer to the ultimate question: where did all of the information in the Universe come from? The answers considered are exhilarating and challenge our concept of the nature of matter, of time, of free will, and of reality itself.

Original show notes: “Thomas Sheridan and Neil McDonald discuss their book and film Atlantis – An Empire Lost and Found.

The lost continent of Atlantis has been the stuff of myth and legend for thousands of years, but did it ever really exist? Although quite specific about the nature and location of Atlantis, Plato’s account is generally taken as allegory by mainstream archaeologists and historians. However, stories of devastating floods and once-advanced civilizations going right back to the end of the last ice age can be found all over the world, as can evidence for them in the archaeology. In this groundbreaking new work, Sheridan and McDonald link the possible existence of Atlantis directly to megalithic culture, specifically that which erected the many stone circles and other similar structures the remains of which dot the Atlantic fringes, particularly around the British Isles.

“Along the way we pose probing questions such as: Do secretive occult orders and mystery schools hide knowledge of past civilizations? Did the misuse of powerful technology cause the destruction of Atlantis, and might we be on the brink of making the same mistakes?
